The Hook Magazine
The Hook is the official journal of The Tailhook Association and as such is the only publication in the world that is dedicated to telling the story of U.S. Navy carrier aviation, both past and present. Each issue contains a selection of carrier and squadron histories balanced with departments containing the latest news of current units and aerospace industry developments affecting carrier aviation. Emphasis is placed on high-quality reproduction of the best photographs available of U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps aircraft in operational situations. A typical issue of The Hook will contain more than 175 photographs and squadron insignia within its pages. Accompanying each carrier history article is a unique matrix containing a list of each squadron, type of aircraft, modex numbers, dates and area of deployment of the featured ship. How to submit squadron/unit news articles for The Hook
- SEND PHOTOS! (Hard copy or digitized, see digital specs below.)
- Include formal portrait of new commanding officer with change of command notice. If available, include a biography of the new CO.
- Photos of personnel in their aircraft are preferred. For 1,000th trap, etc., a photo of actual landing is always best, accompanied by a photo of the individual.
- SEND PHOTOS! (Don't send photos of cakeswe're on a diet.)
- Current inflight, landing or launch photos of aircraft are needed to update our files. We love shots of formations, unusual evolutions or external weapons loads. Good original slides shot with Kodachrome® or equivalent film (or high-resolution digital at least a 20MB file) in a vertical format make the best covers. For those in the digital age, send us photos either on computer disk or via the Internet (thookassn@aol.com). High-quality JPEGs work best. For best reproduction, please ensure that the photos are at least five inches in the "long" direction and 300 dpi. Photos at 72 dpi may work for the World Wide Web or PowerPoint presentations, but don't publish well.
- Type news releases double-spaced with upper- and lower-case letters (not all caps). If possible submit text on CD or e-mail the text and photos (high-quality JPEGs).
- We cannot use files in PowerPoint format.
- Don't embed photos in MS Word documents. Either e-mail the photos as separate JPEG attachments (zipped files are OK) or send a computer disk or hard copies of the photos by snail-mail.
- Deadlines:
Spring1 February;
Summer1 May;
Fall1 August;
Winter1 November.
- SEND PHOTOS! Work with the base or ship PAO to help us publicize your squadron.
- Units interested in publishing a complete history of their organizations should contact The Hook staff for guidelines and assistance.
- Send all material to: Editor, The Hook, 9696 Businesspark Ave., San Diego, CA 92131. Telephone (858) 689-9227 or (800) 322-HOOK; Fax (858) 578-8839; thookassn@aol.com.
